For the teacher-created podcasting project, I first had a brainstorming activity about the children's favorite snack. After we have tallied the children's favorite snacks, we came up with chocolate as the children's favorite among all. Using this information, I chose a book that would be an enjoyable one for the children to listen to, hence the choice of Chocolate Choco Hippo by Vincent Andriani for this podcasting project.
For the student-created podcasting project, the children had been working on letters of the alphabet and words/objects associated with these letters. As the children brainstormed what objects they can name for each letter, the children decided that they could make an alphabet book. In deciding how to produce the book, the children thought of different ways which included drawing, sketching, painting, cutting out pictures or even taking photos of these objects. As the children decided to use a digital camera, they all went around the school with their list to take photos of these objects. After the photos have been uploaded on voicethread, children narrated what their pictures are about. In the end is a project that the children have collaborated on.
Reflection:
Using voicethread for podcasting is an interesting medium to narrate stories. It provides a variety for story-telling which the children clearly enjoyed. The story could be told over and over again and could be used for future kindergarten classes, which in the long run is a good investment of time spent wisely.
Using the digital camera and voicethread to make these photos come to life was a wonderful opportunity for the children to use their literacy skills through technology.
Teacher-Created Podcasting: Chocolate Chippo Hippo by Vincent Andriani The teacher narrated the story "Chocolate Chippo Hippo" by Vincent Andriani. The children can respond to the story by adding their comments, too.
Student-Created Podcasting: THE ABC BOOK The students created an alphabet class book using a powerpoint presentation. First, the children brainstormed ideas as to how they want to present their class book. The students then took pictures around the school of objects that have the beginning letter assigned to them (example: pencil for letter P). These photos were then uploaded in a powerpoint presentation. The children can also narrated sentences about the photos taken.
